If state officials in Indiana have their way, nursing homes will lose 50% of their Medicaid population over the next four years. The proposal, designed to curb the mushrooming costs of the state's Medicaid program, would move poor elderly out of skilled nursing facilities (SNF) and into less expensive care settings, according to The Indianapolis Star.
Nursing homes in Indiana have been losing Medicaid residents for five years, but this plan would require a freeze on the creation of new nursing home beds. Former nursing home residents would live in less expensive facilities with a more homelike atmosphere, a state official told the Star. Nursing home associations expressed concern that those residents would no longer receive an appropriate level of care after their transfer.
