The cost of coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is more than 80% higher in U.S. hospitals than in Canadian hospitals, despite the fact that there were no differences in clinical outcomes, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Researchers compared outcomes and costs of treatment for more than 12,000 patients undergoing CABG. Despite the fact that the LOS was 17% longer in Canada than in the United States, the cost was 82.5% higher in the U.S., say researchers. There was no difference in in-hospital mortality rate between the two countries.
