Emergency response grants totaling $600,000 were given to Louisiana, Alabama, Texas and Mississippi last week to ensure that mental health assessment and crisis counseling are available to people affected by Hurricane Katrina. Each state received a grant between $100,000 and $200,000.
The grants are from the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). They are provided to state and political jurisdictions when local resources are overwhelmed.
The grants will provide counseling to disaster workers and first responders, such as firefighters, rescue workers and shelter staff and patients will be assessed by behavioral health specialists. Medication, brief interventions, referrals to extended treatment and education will also be provided.
The grants may also cover overtime staffing, transportation expenses for a relief team, and emergency food and supplies.
