On Monday, teams of volunteers were sent by the Department of Health and Human Services to assist in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The volunteers - medical team members of Scripps Health and Kaiser Permanente - signed on to volunteer with the Hospital Relief Efforts at http://www.hospitalreliefefforts.org/. Scripps Health sent 40 physicians and nurses (and their chief operating officer and chief medical officer) to relieve the University of Texas healthcare providers of their endless duties.
The exhausted caregivers have opened up an emergency outpatient clinic at the Houston Convention Center, and have seen up to 1,000 patients each day. Volunteer teams from Scripps will take over caregiving efforts at the makeshift clinic for two weeks. Volunteers from Kaiser Permanente - seven physicians and a family therapist - will offer care and support at Houston community health centers.
