Hospitals that participate in quality improvement organization (QIO) programs are not more likely to improve their performance on quality indicators than hospitals that don't participate. Researchers compared quality data in five clinical areas: atrial fibrillation, acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, pneumonia, and stroke. They found no statistically significant difference between the quality data of participating hospitals v. non-participating hospitals in most of the quality indicators. The one indicator which had improved for participating hospitals was the pneumonia immunization indicator, said the researchers.
