A new study shows that heart patients with long stays in the ICU are more likely to die or have their quality of life reduced when compared to patients who are quickly released from the hospital, according to a report in Heart Medicine Online.

The study, released in the Journal of Cardiac Medicine, showed patients who left the ICU within 48 hours were more likely to survive and maintain a better quality of life than those who remained in the ICU.

The study also found that the longer the stay, the worse the results. Patients who stayed in the ICU for less than 11 days had a better average outcome than those who stayed for more than 16 days.
