Obese women with breast cancer may be receiving lower doses of chemotherapy-putting them at increased risk of the cancer recurring, says a study in the latest issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. Obese or overweight women with breast cancer are 1.3 times more likely to have their cancer return than women at normal weight. Researchers believe this may partly be attributed to the lower dose of adjuvant chemotherapy these women receive. The study says physicians may reduce the doses, which are calculated by body weight, because they fear a higher dose will have toxic effects.
