Biomedical ethicists at the Stanford University School of Medicine are calling on researchers to implement a unique set of protections for women who donate their eggs for stem cell research, reports Health Insurance Law weekly. In a paper published in the May 20 edition of the journal Science, the ethicists urge the creation of a new category of clinical trial participants called "research donors" that are not financially compensated. They add that institutional review boards should establish guidelines to help judge the consent process and ensure that consent documents clearly illustrate the level of risk involved in being a donor. They also suggest that journals publishing stem cell research should verify that all work published conforms to the set ethical guidelines and that journals move away from using the term "therapy" to describe the research.
