Cleveland Clinic Florida Hospital paid $2.75 million to the federal government to resolve a case in which the facility was charged with billing Medicare for observation services for patients who did not meet the correct criteria. The government claims the hospital unnecessarily billed Medicare for extra observation services when a patient was recovering from minor surgery or visiting the emergency room. Normally, observation costs are included in the cost of monitoring a patient.
