State surveyors got notification from CMS in December, informing them that the agency is strengthening its program to go after skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) with consistent issues of poor care. Instead of the old method of targeting two problem facilities per state, the Special Focus Facility Program will increase surveys by 30%, hitting more SNFs in larger states.
CMS will also improve its selection process for choosing facilities with poor results, using at least three years of past data to determine facilities' quality of care. Additionally, it will toughen enforcement, demanding immediate sanctions for facilities that fail to show improvement for citations given.
