A physician advisor on your case management team is an invaluable tool for reducing LOS and resource utilization. "One of the most important components in the case management process is the relationship between the physician and the case manager," says Rita Johnston, MSN, RN, CRRN, CCM, director of case management at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, TX.
Examine the relationship your department has with your physician advisor. Are case managers fully taking advantage of the expertise and advice the advisor can provide? Or is there tension between the physician and case managers that blocks staff from approaching the advisor for help on tough cases? If so, look into bringing a new advisor on board that has a history of working well with case management.
