CMS announced the results of the Nursing Home Quality Initiative in which nursing homes were encouraged to work with quality improvement organizations (QIOs) to improve certain aspects of quality. During the past two years, skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) were able to reduce pain in long-stay residents by an average of 38%, CMS reported. Even more impressive were the results for SNFs working with their state QIOs, which showed pain reduction improved by 49%.
While most clinical outcomes measured showed positive trends, SNFs were unable to make progress in preventing pressure ulcers, CMS officials announced.
