The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) recently announced that it intends to cover counseling services to help certain Medicare beneficiaries quit smoking. The agency estimates more than 9% of those 65 and older smoke, and 440,000 people die from smoking-related diseases. Around 57% of elderly smokers desired to quit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and nonsmokers lived 1.6-3.9 years longer than those who smoke.
