Aging baby boomers, a growing federal deficit, and increased healthcare spending could spell deep Medicare cuts that would impact hospitals, according to a report released by PricewaterhouseCoopers' Health Research Institute. The report recalls the last time the United States had an increasing budget deficit which resulted in Congress enacting the Balanced Budget Act, significantly reducing Medicare spending on hospitals. The report predicts a similar act could roll back many payment increases recently distributed by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003.
