More research needed before CMS covers obesity surgery, says panel

A Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) advisory panel recommends more research before the agency decides to cover bariatric surgery for obese patients who don't have another illness causing their obesity. The panel is concerned about the short-term mortality of patients who undergo the surgery, and they need more information on long-term survival, co-morbidities, and sustained weight loss.
