Elderly people who receive a flu vaccine each year reduce their risk of death by up to 31%, according to a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers studied the medical records of 26,000 non-hospitalized elderly flu patients over the course of six years. For those who were over 65, receiving a flu vaccine reduced their risk of death by 10%. Getting revaccinated a year later then reduced their risk by 24%. The older a patient was, the greater the reduction, says the study. Those over 80 reduced their risk of death by 31% by getting revaccinated.
