On the cusp of the flu season a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association says the number of flu-related hospitalizations has increased in the last 20 years. After analyzing hospital discharge data from 1979 to 2001 researchers concluded influenza was linked to more than 200,000 hospitalizations annually. After adjusting for the length of each flu season, researchers found that the number of hospitalizations for flu-related symptoms increased over time among the elderly.
