When patients are admitted to the hospital on a weekend, the patients' mortality rates rise 3% higher than the mortality rate of those admitted during the week according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Medicine. Researchers analyzed more than 500,000 admissions to 441 California hospitals, including both teaching and non-teaching hospitals. They also found the "weekend effect" was more prevalent in major teaching hospitals.
