Thousands of Medicare-eligible Virginia women do not receive annual mammograms, according to a new study by the Virginia Health Quality Center. The study, which tracked the women for two years, reported 40.6% of women did not receive annual mammograms. The factors related to the low results may be long wait times for scheduling appointments, limited access to providers, or personal or cultural barriers. Income did not appear to be a factor. The study was based on more than 56,000 Medicare claims from July 2001 to June 2003.
