Substance abuse and mood and anxiety disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in the country, according to a new study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's national epidemiological study included more than 43,000 non-institutionalized adults. Researchers concluded that 9 % of the population has a mood disorder, 11 % has an anxiety disorder, and more than 9 % have issues with substance abuse. The study's authors also found that the mood and anxiety disorders were independent of the substance abuse for the majority of those surveyed. "About 20 % of all persons in the general population with a current substance use disorder had at least one current independent mood disorder," wrote the researchers.
