Next year all newly enrolled Medicare beneficiaries will have their initial physician examination covered by Medicare. CMS will also cover cardiovascular screening blood tests and diabetes screening tests for those at risk. The agency has changed its policy on covering these preventative tests in the hopes of increasing early detection and treatment for life-threatening diseases. During the initial "Welcome to Medicare" physical, the physician will examine the patient and educate the beneficiary about other preventative services provided by Medicare. The cardiovascular blood tests include cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, and triglycerides screenings. Beneficiaries can receive the test every five years.
