Pediatric patients often experience medically adverse events during their hospital stay-greatly increasing the average length of stay (LOS) and cost of care, according to a recent study. The study, from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, examined 5.7 million discharge records for children under 19 from 27 different states. Researchers found more than 50,000 patient safety events resulting in infections and injuries. Medical infections received during hospitalization caused a 30-day increase in the average LOS and an increase of more than $121,000 in costs per discharge. The most prevalent patient safety event was obstetric trauma among adolescent mothers, according to the study.
