The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) plans to expand Medicare coverage for brain scans of patients who possibly have Alzheimer's disease (AD). The scan, positron emission tomography (PET), is used for patients who have suspected AD. The patients will only be eligible for a Medicare-subsidized PET if a clinical evaluation does not determine a specific diagnosis. Medicare will also cover PET for patients with early dementia or memory loss if they are enrolled in clinical trials, as long as the trials provide informed individualized analysis and the evaluation of the test results.
