A recent study of cancer patients by three otolaryngology surgeons found that elderly black male cancer patients had a longer average length of stay (LOS) than white elderly male cancer patients. The study analyzed the National Hospital Discharge Survey, a database of inpatient hospital discharge data sampled from medical records at 500 short-stay hospitals. Researchers sorted the data by age, sex, race, medical diagnoses, procedures performed, LOS, source of payment, and discharge status. The study's authors focused on patients with malignant tumors on the head and neck.

Researchers also found that black patients were more likely to list Medicaid as the primary payer for their care.
