Medicare recently informed rural critical access hospitals (CAHs) that beginning October 1, they can set aside units with 10 beds each for inpatient rehabilitation and psychiatric services-making it easier for patients with Medicare to receive services near their homes. The units will be paid as though they are separate units in acute care hospitals, says the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The units will also have to meet the same standards as those in acute care hospitals.

Medicare will pay for patient care in the CAH inpatient rehab unit with the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Prospective Payment System. The agency will pay for psychiatric services on a reasonable cost basis.
