Starting in May, some state pharmacy assistance programs can
automatically enroll low-income Medicare beneficiaries into the new
Medicare prescription drug discount card plan. This new card will provide
prescription drug benefits to those whose medications are not covered
through Medicaid. States that have authority to act as an authorized
representative of a beneficiary will be allowed to enroll him or her into
the program-giving the individual $600 to pay for prescription drugs. Individual beneficiaries with annual incomes less than $12,569 or couples
making less than $16,862 will be eligible for the $600 annual subsidy, and
will not have to pay any enrollment fees. For those not automatically enrolled, Medicare plans to distribute a standard enrollment form and will also post the form on its Web site, www.medicare.gov. Once enrolled, people can begin using the card on June 1, 2004.
