A 45-year-old patient has had two back surgeries. A pain management specialist recommends a dorsal column stimulator (DCS). The case manager wants to challenge the doctor over this decision, but needs statistics. One case manager, who had a DCS implanted twice for reflex sympathetic dystrophy, suggests contacting Medtronic(www.medtronic.com) - the supplier of the internal equipment for the woman's surgery. Ask about their success rates, says the case manager. Success rates have improved in recent years. Doctors now use a paddle shaped lead that resembles a mini boating oar.
