This is the usual course for a patient with insurance. Some elderly patients stay a little longer. Just about all of these patients stay at a post-acute rehab facility. Medicare would like case managers to skip the rehab, but that's tough to do, says June Stark, director of case management at North Shore Medical Center, Salem, MA. A 55-year-old woman from Russia broke her hip in March during her visit to the U.S. She had limited Medicaid, which meant her hospital stay was covered, but she was not eligible for coverage beyond the hospital visit. "These cases are never simple and take multiple interventions to get the patient discharged," says one case manager.
