Claims issues holding up IA hospitals' payments

Iowa hospitals last month cited missing claims and information disappearing from claims as two factors behind a growing backlog of accounts receivable. In a meeting with the state Department of Health Services and members of the Iowa Hospital Association, Medicaid claims processor ACS State Healthcare said it is having problems with the HIPAA-compliant form that acknowledges the receipt of a provider's claim. The organization also said it is having problems notifying hospitals when transactions are unsuccessful. ACS and state officials said they would look for a software vendor to help address this problem. Hospitals across the country report similar problems getting clearinghouses to accept, process, and generate HIPAA-compliant claims. Iowa hospitals are undertaking a formal study of how HIPAA regulations have affected accounts receivable.
