Under a new program at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, PA, called "express care," a nurse practitioner works under the supervision of a physician to care for patients who do not have an acute condition.

With express care, patients with non-emergent conditions wait roughly 60 minutes in the emergency department (ED), down from more than two hours. Mercy renovated its ED, adding a new section for its express care patients. The area consists of four exam bases. Cases seen here include patients with cuts, sprains, strains, sore throats, insect bites, urinary tract infections, and flu symptoms. The express care area is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
