According to the Georgia Hospital Association, hospitals are facing an increasing number of problems. Medicare and Medicaid have made substantial cuts to the amounts they will reimburse, forcing many hospitals simply to take those cases as a loss. Also, hospitals regularly treat uninsured patients at a loss, and also face growing population numbers and sky-rocketing malpractice premiums.
As a result, more than two-thirds of hospitals in Georgia finished in the red in 2003. Now, with the Medicare Modernization Act, hospitals will be required to offer one more expensive treatment to the community--more chemotherapy care. This will require additional space, new equipment, as well as payroll for the highly-trained nurses who are required to administer the drugs.
