Norwalk Hospital offers overcrowding solutions
Although there are currently no permanent solutions for emergency department (ED) overcrowding, Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, CT, has put the following in place to address the issue:
- An Express Care Unit. This separates patients who require immediate medical attention from those with more minor ailments.
- Additional care guidelines. These help nurses administer medications before a patient sees a physician.
- Early discharge. Staff discharge patients from inpatient care earlier in the day.
- Hallway beds. There are now eight beds in a hallway in the department.
