AHA exec: Rising drug prices a threat to patients
Case Management Insider, November 3, 2015
The price of medications is rising rapidly and needs to be reined in, according to Tom Nickels the American Hospital Association executive vice president of government relations and public policy.
“Recently, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released a report that highlights how quickly prescription drug spending is rising. It is projected to have accelerated from 2.5% in 2013 to 12.6% in 2014,” stated Nickels in an AHA blog post.
This is a trend that is putting a “strain on the entire health care system,” and puts pressure on patients who are paying more out of pocket, he said. While drug prices are rising, hospitals and health systems appear to have successfully reined in costs—price growth amount hospitals dropped from 2.2% in 2013 to 1.4% in 2014.
