Study: Communication critical in improving readmission rates

Is there a magic bullet when it comes to reducing your hospital’s readmission rates? New research from published in Management Science says yes—good communication. Another critical factor is adherence to evidence-based practices.
The study, called “The Impact of Combining Conformance and Experiential Quality on Hospitals’ Readmission s and Cost Performance,” analyzed data from 3,474 U.S. acute care hospitals over six years and found that the combination of good communication with patients, as measured by March 2013 HCAHPS survey performance, and sticking to evidence-based care standards reduces the number of readmissions.
