Study finds new ways to reduce SSIs

New information about the causes of surgical site infections (SSI) might one day help to better prevent them.

The Joint Commission’s Center for Transforming Healthcare’s SSI Project spent two years tracking colorectal surgeries to determine which practices led to higher infection rates. What it found was 34 different variables involved in SSIs and as a result participating organizations were able to reduce a specific type of incision infection by 45% and overall infections by 32%.
