Residents follow supervising physician lead in medication prescribing

A new study indicates that physicians may not always focus on the most cost-effective option when it comes to prescribing medication.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine found that resident physicians often order the same type of medication as the attending physician they work with. For example, residents were two times more likely to order a brand-name statin if that’s what their supervising physician prefers.
