Survey: Physicians say quality metrics negatively impact quality of care

A Commonwealth Fund and Kaiser Family Fund survey of primary care physicians finds that they give the thumbs down to readmissions penalties and quality-of-care metrics—saying they will drag down patient care.

Fifty percent of primary care physicians say the increased use of quality metrics to assess provider performance is having a negative impact on quality of care. Fewer physicians surveyed (22%) see quality metrics as having a positive impact on quality. More than half (52%) say hospital readmissions prevention programs are also negatively affecting care.
