AARP report shows observation status cases rising

Case Management Insider, July 7, 2015

In 10% of cases, patients placed on observation status pay more for their care than they would have if they were admitted as an inpatient, says an April 2015 report published by the AARP.

In addition, one-third of observation patients who were referred to a skilled nursing facility after discharge, decided not to go, possibly because of the cost, says the report. The AARP says this information combined with an increase in observation status cases raises important questions about whether the government should step in to amend existing regulations.
