AHA wants revisions to Readmissions Reductions Program

CMS’ Readmissions Reduction Program has come under fire numerous times from individuals and organizations who say the formula used to calculate penalties is flawed.

The American Hospital Association (AHA) has also been critical of the program and issued a report calling on government officials to rethink the program. The report Rethinking the Hospital Readmissions Program outlines some of the flaws in the current system.
 
Readmissions should be focused on those conditions that are avoidable, and also adjust for socioeconomic factors, which can raise the risk for readmission, yet are outside of the organization’s control. AHA members discussed the findings of the report on Capitol Hill on March 19 and asked lawmakers to consider making changes.
