Surgical readmissions often caused by new complications

A study in the February 3 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that patients often wind up back in the hospital after surgery due to new complications related to the procedure and not due to exacerbations of past problems.

Readmissions after surgery, said study authors, are really a measure of post-discharge complications. This should be considered by officials calculating readmission penalties for surgical readmissions.
