Mentor moment: Case management and clinical documentation improvement

Case Management Weekly, October 17, 2012

Case managers play an important role in successful clinical documentation improvement (CDI) projects due to their presence on the nursing unit and their professional relationship with the physicians.

Although a CDI specialist may cover multiple units, a floor-based case manager has a better chance of seeing a physician and discussing the case. Therefore, case managers can play an important role in ensuring that a physician is aware of a query and provides a response in the progress notes. Strong CDI programs include the cooperation of case management staff in obtaining answers to queries and promote the symbiotic relationship.
