Nearly 5.4 million senior citizens and individuals with disabilities have saved more than $4.1 billion on prescription drugs since enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, HHS said in a press release.

Senior citizens in the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap known as the “donut hole” have saved an average of $768, HHS said. During the first seven months of 2012, the new law helped nearly 18 million Medicare beneficiaries receive at least one preventive service at no cost.
