Case Management

Tip: Training your physician advisor

Case Management Weekly, August 1, 2012

The best way to orient physician advisors is to have them spend time with case managers. They need to shadow a case manager so they’ll understand the issues from every angle.  This helps them understand what case managers do and engenders respect for case managers.

Physician advisors also should spend time with the vice president of medical affairs or the chief medical officer. These physicians, during their respective careers, will likely have participated in physician advisor activities and can serve as excellent mentors.

This week’s tip is adapted from Optimizing the Physician Advisor in Case Management: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Measurable Program Results published by HCPro, Inc.
