Mentor moment: Home health face-to-face requirement effective April 1

Case Management Weekly, April 6, 2011

The home healthcare face-to-face requirement will become effective as scheduled.

CMS Director Jonathan Blum told the Face-to-Face Workgroup that CMS expects full compliance with the home health face-to-face requirement starting April 1.

The requirement mandates that any patient referred to a home health agency have a face-to-face encounter with a physician or other licensed independent practitioner (e.g., nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwife, or physician assistant). Failure to comply will result in payment denial.

The Face-to-Face Workgroup, which consists of representatives from ACMA and other organizations, has been actively working to share concerns regarding the face-to-face requirement with CMS.
