Case Management

Tip: Patient advocacy an essential case management function

Case Management Weekly, March 30, 2011

Case managers should serve as advocates as patients progress through their hospital stays. Advocacy occurs on many levels. Possible tasks include:

  • Ensuring that tests, treatments, and procedures occur in a timely manner (patient flow)
  • Advocating for a continued hospital stay with a third-party payer (utilization/denial management)
  • Advocating for continuing care services in the community (discharge planning)

Never underestimate the role of patient advocate; it is a critical component of the case management process.
