Tip: Patient advocacy an essential case management function

Case managers should serve as advocates as patients progress through their hospital stays. Advocacy occurs on many levels. Possible tasks include:
- Ensuring that tests, treatments, and procedures occur in a timely manner (patient flow)
- Advocating for a continued hospital stay with a third-party payer (utilization/denial management)
- Advocating for continuing care services in the community (discharge planning)
Never underestimate the role of patient advocate; it is a critical component of the case management process.
