CMS increased the number of medical records that recovery audit contractors (RAC) can request in a 45-day period from hospitals with more than $100 million in annual Medicare payments.
Prior to the change, RACs could ask for a maximum of 300 records per 45 days from hospitals. Under the new cap, RACs can request up to 500 records per period from hospitals that exceed $100 million in Medicare payments annually.
