Case management involvement in preadmission utilization review is essential.
This function typically falls within the responsibilities of the access or admitting departments. Case managers who perform this function should review planned admissions for appropriateness of the level of care based on each patient’s clinical condition and needs. Case managers also should review transfers and direct admissions to ensure that the correct level of care is identified based on patients’ clinical needs and condition.
This week’s tip is adapted from Core Skills for Hospital Case Managers published by HCPro, Inc. For more information about this book or to order your copy, visit the HCMarketplace.
