Recent legislation signed into law by President Obama allows states to opt out of certain requirements of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Specifically, the new law allows states to opt out of the individual mandate three years earlier than scheduled. Originally, states could opt out of federal requirements in 2017 if they implemented their own healthcare reforms that meet the goals of the federal law. These goals include extending coverage to as many citizens as would occur under federal law and lowering overall costs.
