CMS has announced its "esMD" (electronic submission of medical documentation) program which will allow providers to submit data to government auditors electronically.
The first phase of esMD will begin during April 2011. During this phase, review contractors will continue to send medical documentation requests via paper mail, but providers will have the option to send medical documentation to contractors electronically.
During the second phase, which CMS hopes to implement in 2012, review contractors will transmit documentation requests electronically to providers whose claims are selected for review. Currently, the following review contractors plan to participate in the esMD pilot beginning in April 2011:
- RACs for regions A, B and D
- MACs for jurisdictions 1, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 14
- Comprehensive error rate testing (CERT) contractor
- Program error rate measurement (PERM) contractor
CMS anticipates likely participation in the esMD pilot by the following review contractors by December 2011 or beforehand:
- RAC for region C
- MACs for jurisdictions 2, 6, 7, 8, 11
- Durable medical equipment (DME) MACs for jurisdictions A, B, C and D
