Tip: Use FISS to track Medicare benefit days

Case Management Weekly, December 1, 2010

Tracking use of services by Medicare beneficiaries is a complex process, but the Fiscal Intermediary Shared System (FISS) can help.

The FISS tracks all claims for services by an individual patient. Many hospital business offices have access to FISS and use it when verifying coverage eligibility for Medicare patients. Also, discharge planners should work closely with business office staff members to access FISS when determining whether a patient has benefit days left, especially when the patient needs extended care rehabilitation services.

This week’s tip is adapted from Discharge Planning Guide: Tools for Compliance, Third Edition published by HCPro, Inc. For more information on this book or to order your copy, visit the HCMarketplace.
